How Health Coaching Works

 

Health coaching is an action-oriented, forward-moving process which begins with you, your vision and your values.  The basic idea behind health coaching is that you are far more likely to make real and lasting changes if they truly belong to you.  

 

Health coaching is a way of taking an honest look at yourself with kindness and compassion, and then planning and living a life that moves you toward your vision of optimal health.  Studies show that having a clear vision alone increases your chances of successfully making change.  

 

First, I help you paint a picture of your vision for optimal health.  Then, I assist you with clearly defining your core values -- that which is most important to you.  As partners we work toward your vision one step at a time.  Change that is deeply rooted in your values is far more likely to last.  You are the key factor in achieving your optimal health vision.  

 

An important part of the coaching process is taking an honest look at where you are now.  This, as with every part of coaching, is deeply rooted in mindful awareness -- compassionately and intentionally paying attention to life as it unfolds in the present moment.  

 

By having a clear picture of where you would like to go, the core values that drive you, and an accurate view of of where you are now, you can choose an area from Duke's Wheel of Health to work on.  Sometimes, your focus might be on a general area such as Movement, Exercise, and Rest.  And other times, you might choose to focus on an area like stress reduction or weight loss, with several parts of the Wheel of Health incorporated at once.  

 

Once you have chosen a focus, you can set goals and then begin taking small steps toward achieving those goals.  And then as these new actions are deeply ingrained and become habits, real and lasting change happens.
